I 8 the Sandbox
In this print work, I pair figures in hazmat suits with objects from childhood to investigate my relationship to nostalgia and anxiety. The effect is both humorous and disconcerting. The classic childhood totems juxtaposed with the amorphous figures in contemporary protective gear reflect the tension between the past and present.
I employ the linoleum block print medium, carved-out shapes, and color palette to echo the tone of our childhood storybooks. The ambiguous intent of the figures provokes questions about who is being protected. And from what? Yearning for “the way things used to be” generates unease about the present and the future, complicating our ability to distill real hazards from paranoid hyperbole.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
