The Day Is Long
My father spent his last years in a dementia facility. During my visits there I photographed him and many of his co-residents including the two women in this image. I sometimes presumed, or tried to presume, wishfully, that memory-challenged people live in an eternal present tense, relieved of the haunting ghosts of the past and the looming demons of the future.
However, as I saw these people in their various moods at various times of day in various stages of health I realized that I could not possibly say from my perspective where they felt themselves to be in a time continuum, and so I decided just to take their pictures, capturing them in eternally present tense images which would last longer than they or I would.
My hope was, and is, to create a common ground of visual contact between memory-challenged persons and myself, and by extension with those who view my images which, by freezing time initially, end up melting it, allowing demented and non-demented persons to meet in that peaceable still point between what has gone before and what is yet to be.
