Artist Statement
Using the figure and elements of the figure, I explore human psychology, specifically focusing on mental disorders and mental well-being. Through my work, I attempt to break down the barriers and destroy the stigmas often associated with disorders such as depression and anxiety.
My paintings, drawings, and sculptures are a means of making visible the invisible?allowing the viewer to see what might lie beneath the outer shell of someone who is suffering.
My current series of watercolors on birch panel depict the figure in yoga poses. The clusters and lines running through and out of the figure represent brain neurons. This series is about the therapeutic value of yoga for treating depression, and grounding the person suffering.
