I grew up in the streets and along the riverbanks of Richmond, VA. I earned a BA in Studio Fine Art from Furman University and a Master of Architecture from Virginia Tech. As an architect (and interior design faculty member at West Virginia University) with an art background, I often reflect on the relationships between design and art.
Photography, as an art, provides a way for me to look intently at the world and to discover, in found situations, new ways for applying design elements and principles to my work as an architect. Through photography, I focus on seeing how things are ordered formally and how underlying geometries or forces contribute to that order. I am particularly interested in conditions of stillness.
In this work titled ‘Floated’, an initial view of a random collection of boats at the water’s edge gives way to understanding that the unseen tensions between the water/wind currents and the fixed pier to which the boats are tethered results in a loose but clear radial organization. Observations such as this may lead to metaphorical concepts for informing design in architecture.
When neither reading the visual world through photographing and drawing the world nor teaching design to my university students, I may be found developing strategies to improve the quality of single-family, low to moderate-income affordable housing or doing my best to nurture the artistic, intellectual, and physical well-being of my family.
