I grew up in Southeastern Massachusetts on the coast in a rural area spending most of my time in, on or around the water. I have a BS in Advertising Design from the University of Massachusetts. I was trained as a “commercial” designer and worked in that field for nearly 40 years in various jobs. The whole time I wanted to paint, finally getting my chance after retirement. It took about three years to start producing real work. Now I can’t stop. I like acrylics for their drying speed and my work is evolving to simplicity and strong colors. I make series of paintings derived from travels, my sketchbook, sailing etc.
“Kuranda” is part of a series of works from a trip we took to Australia, New Zealand and Fiji. I am only about a quarter of the way into that adventure. Other paintings in the series can be seen on my website, http://www.hitchenworks.com When I saw this huge hunk of machinery plowing through the rain forest, apparently flying above the parrots, I wanted to record the scene and try to capture a sense of the surreal.
