I am fascinated by the repeating curvilinear patterns of motion that abound in nature – from the coiled trajectories of sub-atomic particles, to the whirling vortices of tornadoes and hurricanes, to Saturn’s orbiting rings, to all those spectacular spiral galaxies pinwheeling through space. My abstractions are rooted in such wonders.
I begin by painting various circular patterns, often slanted or distorted, onto separate rectilinear-shaped panels. Wet into wet paint application and directional brush strokes enhance the sense of flow, circulation, and movement within each piece.
Finally, I reassemble these panel sections, like pieces of a puzzle, to complete the rectangular-shaped or square-shaped composition. Although the shapes and patterns echo one another, they remain disparate and don’t match up. The fragments fit and don’t fit together at the same time – alluding to the incomplete picture we have of nature’s workings.
My work also bears a resemblance to choreography. An abstract version of Matisse’s “The Dance” comes to mind: But instead of figures frolicking in a circle we have separate fragments, each adding its own individual twist or twirl to the whole, collaborative, communal whirl.
