Mind Map 1
The process of creating art is unrestrained and unplanned for me. I work in an almost meditative state and allow my tools and materials to create lines, shapes and colors spontaneously. As the piece progresses and the feelings and emotions within me are given release onto my canvas, I am later able to engage conscious thought and carry the piece into its final state.
This current series, ‘Mind Map’, is a visual documentation of the emotional and psychological activity that takes place in my subconscious mind. These pieces convey momentum and energy which represent the constant flux of my mind. Simultaneously, isolated islands of stillness in these works reflect the peace that often interposes between the otherwise persistent whir of activity.
‘Mind Map I’ was done in charcoal and ink. Strong, dark lines and shapes contrast with the softer, elusive ones, like the submerged feelings of our subconscious being drowned by the heavier and louder thoughts of our conscious mind.
Almost lost in all the activity are a few small secluded shapes that are filled with Sanskrit mantras – these represent the stillness that spiritual awareness can bring to the mayhem of one’s mind.Above all, Mind Map is each person’s individual journey and I hope viewers follow this rollercoaster of self-exploration and perhaps find their own truth.
