Choice of media I prefer black and white to color. I used black and white film until my 35-mm Canon Rebel broke. Now I take digital photographs in color using a Canon Rebel XSi and then convert them to black and white in Photoshop CS3. I try to give them the “look” of silver gelatin prints. I wish I owned the newest Leica camera—the one that shoots only in black and white—but I don’t.
Artistic vision Shots that most appeal to me are ones in which I am looking up or down or around corners. I like perspectives and patterns/repetition and the spaces and connection between things, like an alley between two buildings or a smaller building between two skyscrapers.
Process As I walk around with my camera, I can generally “see” a particular photograph I want in my mind’s eye, but it’s never a question of just taking the photo. For Indirection, I knew I wanted to photograph stairs, but I had to combine several photographs to get the look I wanted.
Subject matterI generally like city scenes better than rural or suburban ones. I’m still trying to figure out how to get high enough up at a bus or truck depot, for example, to look down at a fleet of trucks or buses and take that shot.
