Artist Meral Akyuz
As a young American artist growing up near the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area I have had various stimuli that have influenced and enhanced my ideas and paintings. Throughout my work layers of vivid, bright hues are fused together to yield vibrant, intricate abstract pieces. I studied advertising and the commercial arts at Marist College, in Poughkeepsie, New York with a minor in studio art. I have been painting in encaustic for almost four years now. My work involves personal, emotionally-driven concepts that interweave with current events in both public affairs or my personal life. Recently, I have been implementing these themes with obsessive brush stroke patterns in the under-paintings of each piece. After this, I cover the entire piece in a solid hue, followed by scrapping the canvas with a blade to reveal traces of the under painting. This is perhaps my favorite part in this process because it reveals each individual layer in the painting. It also visually creates pockets of luscious, vibrant color and intricate details which is the heart of my work. My encaustic paintings are enhanced with the use of mixed media, I frequently use thread, oil sticks, ink and other materials for more intricate details. What I find most interesting in my paintings is what the viewer makes of it and what kind of reaction it produces in them. As I continue to paint, I am constantly seeking new and challenging ways to create visually intriguing work while implementing new techniques, textures and themes into each piece.
