ARTIST STATEMENTWhilst studying I was encouraged to look beyond the obvious, regarding subject matter and to experiment using alternative materials. The use of wax, shoe polish and dye became prevalent in many of my artworks. The method of Batik is an influence from the local African tribal crafts people. The very linear quality of the batik work and the process allows for an unpredictable result, making each finished painting a revelation. In the painting “Rapturous Aura” the subject matter is influenced by the water starved surrounding African landscape, as is the monochromatic palette. The use of the spiral creates a spiritual quality and the three figures are reminiscent of calvary hill. The work is a metaphor for a universal spiritual drought. Spiritual lack pertains to an absence of priority and compassion for the common good of humanity. A rapture could address that lack through an awakening or an awareness.
