Expect the Unexpected
My work is drawn from the style of abstract expressionism, and I continually explore new techniques and designs. Painting is liberating; it is challenging; it is exciting; and it is peaceful. All at the same time. Painting is a world of unlimited possibilities.
I have a passion for color and complexity. I do not seek representational forms, although occasionally they emerge. Instead I seek to create images with high visual impact that immediately draw the eye from a distance and also invite closer exploration of the detail. When someone looks at my paintings, I encourage them to open their minds to what they feel, rather than try to rationalize the image. We each view encounters, interactions and others differently, through our own unique lens. The same is true for how we interpret painting.
My works are on canvas and I use latex, enamel and acrylic paints, with some oil. I work with palette knives, putty knives, paint rollers and occasionally even brushes! Sometimes, I have the essence of the design in mind, and sometimes not. I Iike to layer on the paint and discover the pattern and textures that emerge over time. Gold, red and black are common in many works – an influence from my time in China. Instinctively, I know when I’ve reached my destination with a painting. I feel excited and peaceful at the same time – excited by the visual impact, and peaceful because I have concluded my journey.
My ideas have no boundaries and are, I hope, never-ending.
