Art Exhibition Silent Communication Portraits
Kevork Cholakian had the opportunity to be photographed by Linus Galleries curator Linnea Lenkus as part of her Artist Portrait Series for the current art exhibition, Silent Communication in our Pasadena art gallery. For the “Silent Communication” art show, Cholakian displayed his piece Self Portrait, which was also chosen as the curator’s choice for the exhibit. Here Cholakian has painted himself with bright light beaming across his face creating a dramatic shadow behind him. With a pear placed in front of him and two hands grasping onto the frame, one also holding a brush, the identity the artist most relates to is exposed: he is indeed a still life painter.

“The play of what is real and what is not is an important part of my work both in painting and clay. I use realism to convey importance and familiarity to my subjects. My compositions are simple, sparse and void of all that is unnecessary; constructed realities which would not normally exist, where imperfect is perfect, imbalance is balance, and disorder is order. I design with that in mind – I am a graphic designer by trade – so design and color play an important role in my process. I focus mostly on single dominant subjects, everyday objects, where the mundane becomes heroic, projecting details forward – larger than life – seducing the viewer to see things commonly overlooked. Incorporating images into the natural structure of my subjects to look closer at the subtle worlds within worlds – sometimes obvious and sometimes hidden. Through this work I attempt to challenge our preconception and to encourage us to have a deeper reading of the seemingly ordinary things around us.”

Linnea Lenkus, a seasoned fine art photographer, strives to build a lasting relationship with artists who participate in our art exhibitions. The goal of her Artist Portrait Series is to show the artist behind the artwork. The potential outcome of this series is to display all the portraits in our contemporary art gallery next to the corresponding artist’s artwork. In addition to devoting her curatorial expertise to Linus Galleries, Lenkus continues to passionately practice photography at her two portrait studio locations, in Long Beach and Pasadena.
