Artist Portrait Series | Leroy Lee

For us, Linus Art Galleries, the artist’s message is important.  We feel that in order to really connect the viewer to an artwork or an artist, there needs to be communication.  An artwork must be understood.  Likewise, an artist’s position and philosophy must be known to create a solid relationship between the viewer and the artist.

This is why we not only encourage (okay, require) artists to write up an artist’s statement, but also  why we encourage locals to visit us.  We love to hear what they have to say about their artwork and their art in general!

Please enjoy the following words by one of our past artists, Leroy Lee, about his core tenets that drive his art and philosophy.

Firstly, I’d like to say: Nice Gallery! Elegant atmosphere in its own way! Don’t let the size of the outside fool you! the gallery showcases lots of contemporary artists and their thoughtful, unique and intelligent works. I had been to the opening reception of the Emanation exhibition. It was just splendid. The owner, Linnea, Julianna and the staff are professional and friendly, it was nice to work with them.

Stillness and Motion are two main elements in my paintings. They are the forms of existence of all things in the universe.  They not only create extreme contrast but also harmonious balance. I would like to express these feelings and thoughts to people through my compositions, brush strokes and colors.

After many years of teaching and painting, I strongly feel that in the process of seeking self-elevation one would have to go through stages of variation in hopes of “using the simplest technique to reveal deepest thought”–a philosphy that is incorporated into Chinese classical painting which itself has metamorphosed with the idea of imagination, stressing upon the idea that what you see is not the true essence of the real world.
