Artist Statement
Flower From Mars illustrates the granular behaviour of pigments when a creamy white fluid acrylic mix is poured along with black and a little red. The reds pushed through to the surface in places and the blacks and whites created grainy bubbles as the molecules of pigment reacted together. I used a palette knife to manipulate the fluid paint to create a powerful and seemingly other worldly composition. I captured the paint effects using a macro lens and then printed the enlargement onto canvas. Finally I added acrylics using traditional brushwork to add depth and texture.
My lifelong experiment with pigment behaviour began with watercolours in which paint molecules can be clearly seen. But it was the work of Paul Jenkins that inspired me to try poured fluid acrylics as a vehicle to create paint effects. I have long known that pigments have individual characteristics but now I could harness fluidity to empower pigments to attract or repel each other and to produce intricate patterns in a flowing journey of evolving bubbly and lacy micro compositions. The unique patterns that form seem to resemble images through a microscope or photos from the Hubble telescope. It is the explosive nature of hot reds and pinks and the slow evolution of blues snd greens that I have sought to capture in the organic compositions of my most recent work.
