Artist Statement
Through hyperbole the work explores the disquiet of living within a culture that has no distinct culture of its own. The canvases progress through atavistic Twombly-esque scribbles, a grid of transfigured book pages, appropriation and right up to the superficial flat rendered image. Utilizing Apophenia (perceiving patterns or connections in meaningless data), as well as material found in the human periphery, the paintings disrupt the exchange between written, verbal, and visual language. The mechanical typography used, along side more handwritten elements, functions as an authoritative voice that can sometimes be misleading or whimsical. Culminating in work that critiques contemporary existence while embracing atavism, with no apologies for sardonic backwards thinking.
Blister Brain or: Tire of Being Human examines living with chronic depression. The work signifies the loss of control in ones own actions, as well as, the overwhelming struggle to find meaning in living. Human beings have a tendency towards apathy. Automata made of bone and sinew meandering through life, performing menial tasks and repetitive actions. When the brain fills with bad chemicals suicidal thoughts become the norm. All that remains is to seek out catharsis. You can either choose to wake up and smell the sulfur or go back to sleeping in.
