Gourmet Frozen Dinner For Two Because You Deserve A Taste Of The Good Life
The idea behind this work is: There is a problem with food. The majority of food we eat is manufactured in mass quantities by business corporations. Industry is concerned with capital. There is a major conflict of interest here. Industry uses methods to make products as fast as possible, for the highest profit, regardless of the very real effects on human beings- health or well-being. Companies have become so large and powerful that they have a monopoly. They will use any means to profit, even if this means adding non-food substances to real food. Don’t Believe me? Do your own research about what is really in food and why it is there. A good place to begin is “The End of Food” by Thomas F. Pawlick.
Despite the magnitude of corporations- power in our day to day lives, there are actions that individuals within communities can take to help change things for the better. The first step is spreading awareness of the problem. No one will care about change if they do not believe there is a problem in the first place. Many people in Western society accept a deadly relationship with food because either they are totally unaware, or they are in complete denial. It is realistic to admit that corporations have such vast control in our society that they will not be stopped by you and me. But if we cannot fully turn the problem around, we must still work to maintain our humanity. A new mixed media collage series I am working on seeks to generate knowledge through dialogue and awareness. In “Gourmet Frozen Dinner For Two Because You Deserve A Taste Of The Good Life”, the Soft doll represents a vulnerable consumer while the Gordan’s Fisherman wire figure stands in for capitalist industry.
