I moved to Manhattan after college and in a city with so many possibilities, where you can find art everywhere you look, I felt overwhelmed and unmotivated. I found every excuse I could for not creating art on a consistent basis but really, I was scared and lazy. I went back to drawing every now and then and even sold some work but hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in many, many years. After settling into a cross-country move to Seattle, I began painting again and now I can’t stop. Out of the Trenches is the first piece I started painting in what I refer to as my ‘journey back to the brush’. Its name refers to how we can pull ourselves out of a dark place. This piece is all about the process and the essence of the paint itself.
I have always been strongly affected by color. The colors with which I surround myself directly affect my mood. I have suffered with anxiety disorder for years, but it wasn’t until recently that I got the help I needed. In my research on the subject I discovered the Wright Theory. Angela Wright suggests that, “We are all affected by color psychologically…and that each hue affects specific psychological modes, thereby influencing mood and behavior in the observer.” It is no surprise then, that even when conveying the idea of discomfort or tension, I gravitate toward vibrant colors that make me, and hopefully the viewer, feel happy and safe. My work is also largely influenced by the idea of balance in everyday life. Throughout our lives, we are constantly evolving and transitioning. I strive to create a balance between wife, mom, artist, and me. This translates to my work with a focus on the balance of color, movement and energy.
