Artist Statement
The starting point of all of my work is always color. In this piece the concept is expanded by adding texture to the mix. Working with transparent watercolors on YUPO® paper in a random way honors opportunities for exploration. I had been working in my garden cutting the dead fronds from the large ferns. Then, they appeared in the painting without much thought. These appear to be floating under the sea.
My process begins with producing a series of background pieces. I apply the paint full strength, lightly spray the piece with water, then lay a clean sheet of YUPO on the surface. After burnishing with my hand, I pull the two pieces apart. I repeat the process until I get several pieces I like. At that point the paint and paper have done their work to present a playground for me. I become the mark maker, the texture producer, the layer maestro. And a new series is born.
The beauty of working the way I do is that it produces surprising results that always speak to me. I never know where the piece is going when I start, but in the end, I know what it was meant to be.
