Artist Statement
There is a WWII Russian submarine with a small museum next to it, nestled near the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California. The afternoon sun shown through the museum window highlighting the rich colors and textures of an old diving suit and helmet. As I moved in to photograph, it was what I saw inside the helmet that caught my attention. Through the goggles, I could see the eyes of the mannequin wearing the suit. Not only was she a female, but a glamorous one at that! She had arched penciled eyebrows and eye shadow on her eyelids. Why on earth would she be used to depict a WWII diver? Was it ignorance? Was she just handy when the display was setup? Was it humor? Whatever the reason, she was delightful oddity to find.
Norma Warden has passion for photographing everyday life, abandoned locations, and unusual subjects. She finds that through photography she can make ‘something out of nothing’. What others may disregard as mundane is often intriguing and unique.
