Artist Statement
Wandering (Topographies) is a documentary photo series that reconsiders the built environment of San Diego County as experienced on foot and away from sites that define San Diego as a tourist destination. Inspired by Eugene Atget and the photographers of the New Topographics, I’m interested in how sites and structures in my wanderings throughout the county impose regulated behavior on the body or offer opportunities for human disruption. But no other structure casts a bigger shadow on the physical, psychological, and political realities of San Diego more than the U.S.-Mexico border. Taken in the parking lot for the ironically named Las Americas outlet mall in San Ysidro, the imposing double-fenced border forms the southern boundary of a commercial site based on the theme (or promise) of a unified, perhaps Utopian, vision of the New World.
