Artist Statement
My painting, “Australian Hot Dog”, was inspired by my son’s Australian Shepherd, Linus. We were living near Wichita, Kansas, when the concept of this piece was born. Kansas is known for its weather extremes, from very cold winters to very hot summers. That particular day, we were outside training one of our colts. The weather was hot, and after chasing the other horses in the corral, Linus was hotter. I already had my camera with me, photographing my colt and the trainer, when I saw Linus lying under one of the few shade trees in the yard. He is a very pretty dog, and I loved the contrast of him against the summer scorched prairie grass.
The technique I am using in this painting is photorealism. Photorealism is a genre of art that encompasses painting, drawing and other graphic mediums, in which an artist studies a photograph and then attempts to reproduce the image as realistically as possible in another medium. I have always been attracted to fine art done in realism. In recent years, I have been amazed at the attention to detail that other photorealists have been able to capture in their work. It looks like a photograph! How did they do that? That was when I realized that I wanted to develop this style as well.
What I like about photorealism is that it challenges the artist to create a composition in the photo, as fine art photographers would do, but you then are challenged further to replicate that image as close as possible to the photo through the masterful application of various media, such as watercolor, acrylic, and oil. This is not easy at all! So, in the end, when the painting is a success, you know you have a masterpiece.
