All In Due Time

Preoccupation is about a woman who is totally lost in thought. Someone catches her in that moment and brings her back to reality. The floating hydrangea petals represent her thoughts as they pass through time. As a viewer is looking at the painting, the further back the panel is the further back in time the flower petals and the figure exist.
Multiple translucent panels are painted upon and stacked like a sandwich to create my three dimensional oil paintings. Each one is carefully composed so that when they are stacked together, the painted content on the panels interact in a visually appealing way. The panels and this method of construction causes an interesting effect when viewing the paintings called parallax. From one angle the figures, the petals and even the landscape become obscured and may even disappear. As the viewer walks in front of the painting, the petals and figures move relative to one another.
My contemporary oil paintings feature traditional painting techniques on present day materials. Multiple translucent panels are painted upon and stacked to create atmosphere and dimension not possible with traditional canvas. My interests in painting the figure, women’s fashion, flowers, landscape photography and nature are carefully and simplistically intertwined in this new series of three dimensional oil paintings. Here I create a world where tangled swirls of beautifully colored flower petals encircle female figures in serene tonal landscapes. Successive moments in time play out on the different layers of translucent panels as if the depicted woman has been captured in a time lapse; the sequence being carefully laid out for the viewer to enjoy visually as well as contemplate.
