Artist Statement
I could watch the tide come in & go out all day, and I’ve tried to capture it in this impression of the shore yielding to the water. Seaside textures are layered onto a base collage of paint washes and magazine pages; all that’s missing is the sound of seagulls. The handmade layer at the base of this piece had a strong diagonal element, from a dark textured scrap, so I balanced it with light tissue paper and watercolors. Suitable digital layers included a low tide horizon, oyster shell barnacles, the wake from a ferry, shell lines, and lichen. Dried flowers and stone added even more texture.
From my 2014 series, Building Blocks, which features pieces with a handmade collage as the base, a gridded square composition, and multiple layers of repeated common elements across the series, representing the choices we’ve made and their effects that build to create our lives.
