Artist Statement
I grow crystals and take pictures of them through the microscope. Shattered is one of my most unusual pieces. It comes from an experiment in which I mixed four chemicals and tried to melt them together, only to find out they had different melting points. I actually became a bit nervous as the flame started licking the glass slide and some of the chemicals started boiling on the glass while others just sat there waiting for a hotter temperature. Eventually the heat did its job and all the substances melted together. I have never seen such a wide variety of crystal structures and colors on a single slide.
I also handled this image a bit differently. There were shards of crystals in the center forming an almost star-like pattern. I decided to digitally add one more spoke to the star. After all that is what artists can do. They can keep the image real, they can add or subtract from it, or they can create an entirely new, imaginary piece. I generally work by adjusting the lighting, using microscope filters, and setting the camera to capture the image in its final state. But with Shattered, I saw the need to add to give it more meaning for me.
Almost all of my artwork is uplifting but this one came at a time of great loss in my life. I felt shattered, pain and despair that was represented when I created this piece.
