Artist Statement
“Assassination” is not about politics, religion, or culture. The piece depicts the assassination of Senator Robert Kennedy in 1968 as experienced and processed, through the media of the day, by an eight year old Irish-American Catholic boy.
The piece contains no religious symbolism, however the stained glass motif, done with tissue paper over oil, alludes to Senator Kennedy’s Catholicism. He and his brother before him, JFK, both took criticism for their Catholic beliefs while campaigning for president.
The text running through the piece from panel to panel were the only audible words I could hear over a transistor radio I retrieved after my Dad, whom was working the night shift as a cop phoned home with the tragic news that had come over the teletype that night.
