Weatherbeater®
Acrylic Painting
Artist Statement
My piece “Weatherbeater®” is a homage to Winslow Homer’s famous painting “Weatherbeaten.” Homer used his paint to capture the essence of the magnificent, rugged Maine coast. In my piece it’s all about the paint. The subject is merely a vehicle to showcase the breathtakingly beautiful physical qualities of the paint. Weatherbeater® is also a nod to the Sears brand paint of the same name.
The proprietary technique I discovered is called painting with “both sides of the paint”. I pour acrylic paint onto clear cellophane and pull it with squeegees. I am able to use the normally hidden side of the paint by gluing the dried paint to the canvas and then pulling away the film. This technique reveals previously hidden underlying gestural patterns giving me an amazing palette.
The paint vacillates between pure physical paint & Pollock like splashes and splatters to photographic Ansel Adams halftone effects. Much of the process is finding animals in the clouds and Jesus in the toast, but ultimately taps into my unconscious narratives. Instead of a literal narrative I work to end up with more of a poetic approximation where our sense of the sublime is expanded.
