Artist Statement
I seek to embrace the everydayness of life and elevate human experience. My painting Sour follows a tradition of artwork investigating the senses (touch, smell, taste, etc.). Inspired by 17th century Dutch and Flemish painters, I find that facial gestures able to highlight a shared human experience. The body’s instinctive response to intense light, spicy food, and revolting odor transcends time and culture.
My works are fashioned from direct observation by repeatedly retching, snarling, and wincing in the mirror. I find this process important for understanding the gesture and human experience.
