Artist Statement
Technically, this series utilizes the panorama feature of my mobile device. My aim was to explore beyond any obvious application of the technology, to see how creative one could get with this new and accessible format. These images use almost no post-shot manipulation. Any manipulation occurs in-shot, during the process of taking the image. Since I have a proclivity to create time-based (or time-oriented) work I aimed to use this feature to capture multiple successive moments and across a succession of spaces that could not otherwise be shot. As a result the images captured shift from landscapes to timescapes – from visual panoramas to temporal panoramas. Each static image captures a duration range of 5 to 180 seconds.
If we define a panorama as an image that allows us to see more of an image – a more complete survey of a subject- allowing for an uninterrupted view, how might we define a temporal panorama? A temporal panorama would suggest the ability to document the cause and the effect – the before with the after. Or at the very least, a temporal panorama allows us the opportunity to see more than a single moment or single place all the while affording us the luxury of viewing a single image. Is this kind of continuity not how our brains interpret information anyway?
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
