Artist Statement
In my practice of painting, I have been exploring the dialogue between the seen and unseen, the positive and the negative. The backgrounds are organic color fields, or rather three-dimensional color spaces, taking shape through a process of covering and uncovering that links upper layers with deeper layers.I spent a year obsessed with drawing figures with charcoal. During that time I began to look at how all the unity of composition in paintings, even landscape, is drawn together by the flow of curves. The lines applied on top of the color spaces form a positive image moving across the compositional field. As this positive image takes shape, I flip myself into the spaces between the curves to understand how these guide movement within the painting. I step back and forth between line and shape in an effort to create a wholeness from these starkly different parts.
These processes of foreground and background speak to a duality or dialogue that mirrors therapeutic dialogue and self-discovery in which I participate during my social work practice.
