Artist Statement
While wandering through the ancestral ground of the Nez Perce tribe, I observed the tiny signs of an approaching autumn season; yellow, orange and red leaves danced in the warm breezes above me or floated on a still pond, while underneath its mirrored surface, mossy stalks of feathery water plants stirred ever so slightly, barely moving. Pine needles and dead leaves crunched beneath my feet as I made my way towards Old Chief Joseph’s gravesite, stopping for a moment at a hand hewn wooden bridge to watch a small creek chuckle over smooth stones of granite, basalt and quartz. This quiet place was once the land known intimately by Joseph’s people, who bravely tread across the landscape northward to reach the Canadian border, searching for a freedom never realized. Yet still, the sun and the moon were still free. Free to gaze upon their own reflections, in a creek birthed by the mountains these people once called home.
