Cancer affects millions of people, yet is ultimately a very personal disease. Uninvited Guest is a series of five 18’x19’x21′ ‘peep hole’ boxes viewed at eye level. Each box addresses a facet of cancer in word and image. Built from birch wood door skin, the boxes are a metaphor for the hastily assembled fragile ‘new’ housing required when illness suddenly becomes integral in our lives.
Chemo depicts the simultaneous medical and personal responses to cancer. The walls, ceiling and floors are covered with medical descriptions of the physical effects of chemotherapy. The poem, printed on a clear Plexiglas wall that fronts images of bald heads, describes receiving chemotherapy treatment. The poet asks, ‘Has longing…done this, unleashed…cells? Have I wanted too much’?
Chemo reflects my interest in the topic ‘How to Address Difficult Subjects in an Artful Way.’ I have focused on other issues such as Death, Political Elections, Poverty, and Life Interruptions emphasizing the personal dimension of broad social/ political issues. My background in offset printing, metal fabrication, painting, and drawing is reflected in particular choices of materials.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
