When I took this picture I had never really done a self portrait, other than a selfie. I knew though, that if I didn’t find a way to make myself uncomfortable the images would look too cheesy or rehearsed. So I made myself vulnerable. Once I did that, I felt like a got the true picture. No makeup, no posed expression, and no trying to make myself beautiful. It was just me, up close and in the cameras face. Even with that I felt the image needed something more. I had so much going on in my life, things that were bringing me down, and I felt like I everything was unraveling around me. I wanted to show that as a physical manifestation in the image.
Being that this is a darkroom image, I decided to try to accomplish this with my favorite darkroom experimental process, Mordancage. This is a process in which you take a finished image and bleach it out. When this is done, it lifts some of the darker emulsion off the paper creating interesting marks and ripples that you can either embrace of wipe off. In this case I did both. I wiped off some of the emulsion on the sides and and let the emulsion on my person fall its own way. It created this sense of the image unraveling which perfectly illustrated how and what I was going through. This process gave me the perfect way to state what I wanted to state in this photograph.
