My recent and developing work continues to explore the idea of using found objects to describe events, locations and people. I believe that the tools that an individual uses have the ability to describe them more vividly than their mere physical appearance. These “Tooling Portraits” allow me to explore characters, locations and events simultaneously.
This project has evolved into a new exploration where I am pairing tooling compositions with character portraits. These portrait taxonomies are presented as diptychs with the intention of revealing a more elaborate depiction of each subject. The people that I choose to be featured in this project reflect a classic and somewhat old-fashioned idea of Montana and the West.
Their proximity and involvement with nature, as well as their proficiency using traditional hand tools compels me to highlight them as ambassadors to Montana. Among the professions profiled are ski patrollers, wilderness fire fighters, boat builders, distillers, equestrians, wilderness river rangers, horse packers, landscapers, houndsmen, arborists, tree fallers, anglers and bicycle guides.
