Porta In Italia
On a recent bike trip through Italy, I was drawn to the rich colours and textures revealing the history of the places we visited. In this piece, I wish to share with the viewer the stories that unfolded before me. These are stories of ancestors, families, artisans, artists, and saints and their struggles along with their victories.
These stories are woven into the paintings with embedded mementos – such as maps, a broken mosaic tile, a film strip cell, a bike chain link, a “taverna” napkin- that were collected along the way.
And just like when visiting a place that invites us to stay a little longer and discover its past, I wanted “Porta In Italia” to be a type of archaeological streetscape with its layers of paint and buried relics.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
