Art Contests Accepted Artists
Both the textile and technological material have a memory. This material memory matters to me. In my recent work, the sculptural textiles I am constructing consist of donated VHS tapes, electrical wire, and 9-track data tape. The 9-track data tape comes from the Women and Gender Studies Archive at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The VHS tapes are complete recordings of the Charlie’s Angels television series that ran from 1976-1981, a time when the cultural freedom of the 60s and 70s clashed with rising conservatism and capitalism. I began to envision what the Post-minimal Art and Art Fabric movements of the 70s might have been like in the 80s. Key artists from those movements died, such as Eva Hesse, or shifted their work from fibers, like Magdelena Abakanowitz, but their aesthetics shaped generations. Those forms-compounded with the information embedded within the material-led me to question the current state of feminism. Both the textile and technological material have a memory.
Made from the entire run of the Charlie’s Angels TV series on home recorded VHS tape. Waffle-weave woven structure with transducers taking the low frequencies from the Charlie’s Angels soundtrack to animate(shake) the weave structure. Duration 1 hour looped.
