Monochrome Artist Heather McGeachy | Promises To Keep

My work is to be read in black and white as a story told by a landscape environment. This is a story about fear. Often we catch a glimpse of hidden truth but choose not to climb into the brambles to uncover it’s bareness. We blame time, commitments or promises. But it is fear of the dark unknown that holds us back. My thoughts, feelings and experiences are related to places. Over time I’ve learned to read stories told in shapes, falling light and shadow and symbiotic relationships within nature. I see complex stories of the human condition within facets of a landscape. Powerful trees tower over low foliage yet new sprigs contain hope and promise under oppression. Dying twigs fall down to reveal the light for new life.

My approach is that of research and process. By removing color, my work approaches an analytical assessment; a black and white telling of facts. My process starts with building supports and making charcoal. Paper and burnt wood layer their stories with my own. Stories of power, loss, joy, reinvention….all can be read in the height of a tree, turning of a flower and nesting of a bird. Often I lay down strong black marks, just to erase and sand them back as to mimic the play of light or describe just a memory.
