Artist Statement
Part of my artistic practice has always been to “play” with paint on a regular basis to learn more about its properties and potential. Ten years ago, I taped a super-fine straight pin to the end of a palette knife, dipped the pin in paint, cocked it back and slung the paint onto a piece of paper. The resulting mark just blew me away. Its defining characteristic was electric energy and it immediately struck me as the perfect visual signifier for string theory. I decided to use the mark in the expression of ideas I had been dealing with for years that deal with the “big picture”. (I had to create a new tool to create the mark since palette knives quickly broke due to metal fatigue.)
In this particular piece, and the others in the “Nebula” series it is a part of, I used the imagery of the physical universe (as revealed by the Hubble telescope) to create an image of the “universe of mind and spirit” as I envision it.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
