Strata is an exploration of layers, physical layers and energetic ones; moving from density to lightness and the other way around, both delving and reaching. My original organizing principles were ideas of earth and air. As I kept working, these were augmented by suggestions of water and fire, metal and wood. While it is certainly a geometric work, arguably even architectural in a certain aspect, I feel it to be something very organic. Ultimately and somewhat to my surprise, I even began to relate to it as a figure (female, a dancer), although too abstract to be named as such. My hope is that viewers might in their own way feel a sense of oppositional reach, and of the pulse of life within matter.
I get to know a painting as I work on it; it almost feels like an act of co-creation, with the painting revealing itself to me at least as much as I apply my own agenda to it. In this painting as in most of my work, one important underlying balance I pursue is that between the forces of control and abandon; I am inspired by loose, unfettered, even chaotic initial marks, gradually organized and structured until I feel a sense of clarity has been reached, a particular expression of feeling which can, I hope, be shared. I find great joy in this process.
