Artist Statement
Much of my work is based on health issues that I struggle with and the fear and anxiety that comes with that. This particular piece is titled “Triptych” because I feel it shows 3 self-portraits; my physical self on the left, my constant fear of illness and death on the right, and the eye line between the two, which is where all of my inspiration comes from.
I use my art as therapy. It’s a good way for me to express these fears and anxieties I have, as well as a way of relating to others with these same feelings. I enjoy being able to create an honest piece of art that tells people who I am.
I use a stippling technique to create my work for several reasons. I like the texture and realism that I can get from it. I also feel that the constant repetition of dots is very meditative and seems appropriate for the personal subjects of my art. Adding various wood stains to the piece gives a sort of an antique or forgotten-about look that adds to the feeling of illness or decay.
