Acrylic Painting

Artist Statement
My artwork is a rhythmic and visual dance of color. If placed in a category, one might say “lyrical abstract expressionism” is the most descriptive. Exploration of nature determines the realm of imagery to be discovered. The “View from the Nest” series begins with nesting and emerges into flight, freedom and independence. A unique atmosphere emerges that allows the poetry of paint to symbolize life’s growth and transformation. My paintings are intuitive in their formation, yet blend the sense of not only capturing the moment, but weaving those moments with the seasons, with elements of nature, and with times of day. These moments are represented by layers of brushstrokes. These markings have become my signature vernacular of visual language.
The series “View from the Nest” not only identifies a bird’s view from its nest, but concurrently a nest of “home”, of building a residence, of raising and nurturing children to become independent — to fly, so to speak, from the nest. Meanwhile, the paintings also take flight with an energy that brings the enthusiasm of sensuous color and luminosity into being. Though inspired by nature, my work becomes preoccupied with the growth and changes of daily life. As a child grows, learns and strives toward freedom, the painter does the same using a lyrical approach to expressing emotions. The passages of feeling from one phase to the next recreates a sensation that is simultaneously rhythmic yet compositionally solid.
Inherent to the artworks’ symbolism is growth, development, and transition. Changes arise from fledgling to flight, from teenage to adult, from dreams and desires to actual fruition and accomplishment. The risk of the unknown develops into energetic patterns of color that can flow as time flows, and flourish as experience takes hold. The nurturing and teaching of a child also resides within the artist as a continual source of nourishment and learning. Waves of emotions, experiences and melodies blend into an atmospheric translation of being and becoming. The imagery can also be taken literally — a calligraphic line for the path of a branch — blotches of paint denote leaves or shadows or sky. Primarily the paint strokes are saturated with emotion, using the fluidity of the paint itself which echoes life’s resilience. The ebb and flow of paint, becomes life’s changes and evolution. I hope the viewer will become inspired by this passionate energy to travel in their own unique direction.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
