Artist Statement
A lot of my paintings are inspired by my favorite authors, their stories and characters. “Humanity Fell” was inspired by a poem of the same name written by my sister Genevieve Pardo. On the surface the poem is about the zombie apocalypse, but to me, it is about what makes us “human” and all our capacity for good, and unfortunately evil. As soon as I read her poem I knew I wanted to make a painting to go along with it. I didn’t want to create an “illustration” that retold her poem, but more of a companion to it. I wanted to paint a kind of Ode or Altar to Humanity, perhaps put together by the narrator of the poem. There is a lot of symbolism in all the objects in the painting, but I want the viewer to draw some of their own conclusions and meaning from what they see. The poem can be found on my website with the painting.
