Artist Statement
In Mesopotamian mythology Ereshkigal is the goddess of the underworld. Traveling through this underworld those who pass through the seven gates are sentenced to spend the rest of eternity sitting in the dark dressed as birds eating dirt. I chose to show an earthen entity passing down judgment and controlling the ones dressed as birds who are sentenced to this fate.
Representing the Mesopotamian underworld with an organic being I wanted to show my visual interpretation on the myth. I used a Solar plate printing technique for the imagery, first hand drawn on acetate with graphite and micron pens before exposing onto the plate and printing. I mounted my print on paper I marbled using the Suminagashi technique.
