Curves & Lines
Call for Artists Accepted Artists
Carpinteria, California USA
Prior to this piece, I was mostly focused on color, shadows, and representing the various objects I was painting. At one point I needed a break from an intense painting I was working on which had many different shades of skin tones to portray. I decided I would work on a separate piece, focusing only on one main color, so I could explore the various shades and temperatures of the color. While deciding what to paint, one morning I noticed a beautifully colored yellow rose in my garden. I took several photos to use as references for the painting. On the photos there was a small dot. While zooming in on the rose to see what the dot was, what jumped out at me were the beautiful and intriguing lines of the flower. With the close up shot, they had a very different look and feel. Previously, I had been carving curved lines into my pottery and the sculpture I created. This photo is what caused me to shift my work towards working on curved lines once again, but this time in oil.
The present work I’m doing is a perfect match for my study and expression of lines – the forms they create, and the understanding of color. In order for me to paint an object, I have to really care about it. If I’m to take the many hours needed to understand and represent what I see and feel about it, the object needs to be something I’m intrigued with. Painting for me, is a bit like forming a relationship. The more time I spend with the object, the more I come to understand and care about it. Each time I look at what it is I’m painting, new parts of it come through and I have a greater understanding of it’s make up. It’s almost like falling in love. You discover new and interesting aspects of the piece you’re viewing and learn to comprehend what is unique to it.
My art is an expression of my journey through life. The events which have shaped, changed, and helped me grow as a person. With each new painting I work on, I discover another aspect of myself that either blocks or challenges me in personal ways. Each piece I create moves me through ways in which to meet or release those challenges. Whatever intrigues me, I paint.
