Artist Statement
Forsaken is a very significant piece. It represents a lowly period in my life, a point where I had crawled alone, into a bottle. I was consumed with abandonment, disparity, shame, anger and resentment. When things were at there lowest, something came over me. I had woken up one morning feeling the usual feelings of guilt, shame, hopelessness. A sudden switch had be tripped. I realized where I was heading. It was sink or swim. I decided to swim. Instead of pouring myself into a shot glass, I immersed myself into my art and came back on top. Forsaken was the first project I did during detoxification.
The figure in this piece depicts a sense of loneliness. The large empty, dark area draws attention to the subject. The posture of the subject invokes a sense of hopelessness. This poor guy.. He needs to go outside and get some sunshine.
To create this piece, a miniature set was constructed. The floor was made with balsa wood and stained with a mixture of black tea & vinegar, with steel wool soaking overnight. The mixture was applied with a sponge, soaking the balsa wood floor, resulting in warping the floor, giving it an aged distressed look. The chair was also constructed with balsa and treated with the same process. The walls were made in Photoshop, printed on large format matte paper, then mounted on foamcore. The figure was sculpted with baking clay. The set was lit with Rosco light panels.
