Artist Statement
This piece is a project of pure design and an exercise in contrast. There is playfulness in its formality. The view simultaneously explodes and implodes, guiding the viewer to the edges of the piece, inward to the center and back out again. The computer generated brush strokes create an ambiguity of process. And of course, the artwork is void of color, allowing the viewer to be taken away by the structure without distraction.
I created “Stark Contrast” using three distinctly different computer software programs. To begin, I used U&I Software’s ArtMatic, a mathematical art generator, to create a black and white pattern. The base pattern I used here was a series of lines and circles modified through fractal space to randomize the effect into a flowing pattern. The second program I used, , is a graphic synthesizer that lays down brush strokes based on the previously created image’s characteristics. The program looks at the luminescence, angle, orientation, color and other factors, and places the strokes as dictated by my careful programing. To create the perfect eight-way symmetry, I employed Adobe Photoshop’s powerful capabilities to reflect a portion of the brush-stroked image into the kaleidoscopic artwork.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
