Artist Statement
I’ve always been fascinated by creatures from myth and folklore. I had seen images of water nymphs when I was in Greece. Years ago I heard a story about 2 cousins in England in 1917 who claimed to have taken photos of fairies. They were believed for years until 1980 when they finally admitted to faking the photos. In this image I imagine the Cottingley cousins visiting the seaside and creating a faux nymph.
It was my first attempt at underwater photography. I sunk a black backdrop into the pool of a friend and held it down with bricks. The model looked beautiful swathed in green fabric and crowned with a viney wreath. We both got into the pool and the idea was to shoot as quickly as possible before we froze. However, when the model started to swim, the fabric revealed a bit too much. In addition, the black backdrop kept coming loose from the bricks and, no matter how hard I tried, I kept rising to the surface. The model was quite a good sport. She swam down to reset the backdrop, wrapped herself in the fabric and let herself rise. I held myself down unsing the pool edge and was able to snap one photo before her crown went floating off.
Process: Image capture and post processing iPhone only. The best camera is the one you have with you. It-s not intimidating technically like a DSLR. I can play and experiment without feeling like,- who the hell am I to be doing fine art
