Artist Statement
As I spread the first colors across the canvas, I’m often as surprised as you are. I prefer to paint without blueprints, but rather to let it evolve through the process. Once an image, color-blend, or piece of texture stands out, I focus on it, nurture it, build around it and find ways to accent it. As the painting grows layer by layer, my own thoughts unwind, and untangle, as if they’re being spread into the paint. This is how my themes occur, as my focal point is seen flying away from the chaos that nearly engulfed it, the battle is worked out through the paint. I see my subject’s victory as the painting progresses, and my subject teaches me along the way. My hope is that he sends you some inspiration, some hope of freedom, as well.
