Space Between
Oil Painting
Artist Statement
In Space Between, I created two areas of activity filled with emotional energy of an event or a place. The quiet blue in the middle represents a meditation. The dark line in the middle could be a thought thrown out while traveling between events or cities and perhaps a line thrown out in space to catch something. Creating quiet spaces in my painting is an important opposite to the energized spaces.
In my sophomore year at Mills College, as an art history and fine art major, I was introduced to the art of Kandinsky. I had tears in my eyes and realized that if it took a lifetime I wanted to paint like Kandinsky.
Gamblin oil paints are of the highest pigment intensity and allow me to reach the inspiration from the Kandinsky paintings. This allows me to give powerful expression to color and my other intention of movement because of the viscous quality of the oils. I can overlay two or three colors wet on wet and scrap through them in one session of painting.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
