Inspired by the relationship between human and nature, Cold Comfort aims to illustrate how the human body is a part of nature. Through photography, I am able to explore my subjects and my own personal connection to nature. The photographic process for Cold Comfort was not pre-planned, but instead, my response to both the landscape and the subjects own response within the space. I chose to photograph my subject in an unknown location to them and to work with an individual with no previous modeling experience. In doing so, the work becomes performative through the process of the subject becoming increasingly comfortable with their surroundings. The camera is able to capture the rawness and honesty of the human body merging with the Earth.
The reason I am compelled to nature may be because of my roots. Boyce, my last name, means individuals who live by the woods. Although, I do not live in the woods like my ancestors may have, the woods, whether familiar to me or not, is where I feel most comfortable. Cold Comfort is a direct reflection of how this particular woods and subject made me feel at that given time on a cool crisp fall evening.
