Artist Statement
“Plane Window No61” is part of my ongoing “Plane Windows” series.
The series feature intimate portrayals of plane passengers, painted as if from outside the plane, mid-flight. The people are presented in a relaxed state, their posture is natural; they are unburdened by the need to pose for the painter or a camera. The goal is to evoke intimacy while presenting an impossible and, therefore, distancing point-of-view.
The painting surface itself is likewise significant: I never use a traditional canvas and instead work with such three-dimensional objects as semi-spheres and wooden cutouts. Here, traditional canvas is discarded in favor of plane window replica. As such, my works are located somewhere between painting and sculpture, demonstrating the object-ness of a portrait and of art in general.
The views expressed by our artists in their artist statements do not necessarily represent the views of our art galleries. Artists can be visually expressive but may verbally misrepresent their true intentions or ideas. Please note that we support expression, whether it is controversial or not, but our intention is never to offend.
